Standards:
RL 4: Determine the meaning of words as they are used in the text,
including figurative and connotative meanings
Analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone
RL 1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support an analysis of what
the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.


Activities:

  1. Write a short story (¾ page) using five vocabulary words from chapter 5 of Advancing Vocabulary Skills. Use contextual clues to illustrate the meanings of the words. Make your story scary!! What makes a scary story. . . scary?
  2. Vocabulary test, chapter 5.
  3. Read Ghost Stories, by Tim O’Brien (listen to the audiobook)
  4. Answer: What does Kiowa mean when he  says that O’Brien
  5. “. . . did a good thing today”?
  6. What textual evidence do you have to support your answer?
