Journal (10 points): 
What are some of the causes of anxiety for teenagers today? Discuss three (or more) causes. Use complete sentences. These causes may be the ones mentioned in The Epidemic of Anxiety Among Today's Students or ideas of your own. 
Give a specific example of someone you know (perhaps you) who experiences anxiety and discuss how bad this problem is, in your opinion.
Discuss how debilitating the anxiety is. 
("Debilitating" means "to make weak in a way that holds you back")

Optional: Discuss what you think can be done about this problem Write 8 minutes, at least 1/2 page

Journal: Why so many teens experience debilitating anxiety and depression? What are some of the contributing factors? (Write about as many as you can think of, in detail, with examples).

As you read the book, you will be keeping a list of the following things, to be turned in when we finish the book.
1. Holden's Likes and Dislikes
2. Keep a list of 25 significant quotes

Things that Holden hates or dislikes
Sharing his inner feelings with the therapist. (doesn't want to be vulnerable?)
Movies because they are shallow and don't take real talent. Not real art
He doesn't like his school, Pency Prep
    The school slogan is fake/phony and a misrepresentation, trying to sound impressive
    All boys school and they won't let students bring dates (only seniors can)
    Students steal things (his gloves) because they feel entitled
    Doesn't like Mr. Zambesi because he wouldn't let them play football.
 Headmaster, Dr. Thurmer and idea that "life is a game."
         It's only a game for "hotshots," the people who win easily.
The word "grand" ("grand people") because it's phony
Hates the idea that life's a game because it isn't, in his opinion.
Things that depress Holden
The thought that he will someday it will be too late.

Activities:

  1. Write a short story (¾ page) using five vocabulary words from chapter 5 of Advancing Vocabulary Skills. Use contextual clues to illustrate the meanings of the words. Make your story scary!! What makes a scary story. . . scary?
  2. Vocabulary test, chapter 5.
  3. Read Ghost Stories, by Tim O’Brien (listen to the audiobook)
  4. Answer: What does Kiowa mean when he  says that O’Brien
  5. “. . . did a good thing today”?
  6. What textual evidence do you have to support your answer?

3.Work on Study Guides. Due the day we take the final test over the book. It will take us almost two more weeks to finish. You should keep up with where we are in the study guide (I know it will take awhile to catch up).
4. Watch movie
Soldier's Sweetheart movie (Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong) 

If you get behind in the book, just read at home.
